Personally, I think the motion pictures are the greatest scientific invention. The motion picture is a series of still or moving images that is captured by camera or created by animation techniques. A motion picture may be made up of several individual images and when these pictures are shown continuously at a moderate speed, the motion of a subject occurs.
Eadweard Muybridge, a photographer from Britain, who spent most of his time in the USA, made this discovery in 1878. He used 24 cameras to capture a series of images of a galloping horse. These images were printed out on separate papers which attached to a drum in a viewing machine. The viewer needed to look into this viewing machine and turned the drum by a hand crank. Meanwhile, the pictures would be shown at a changeable speed, therefore, motion picture occurred.
There are several reasons why I think this scientific invention is so important. First of all, it is an unique form of art which combines literature, drama, music, dance with sculpture, photography and even computer techniques. Secondly, it is also an industry needs cooperation. Therefore, the prosperity of motion picture, promoted the developments of several, relevant industries, including the operation and management of motion picture, computer technology, tourism and so on. On the other hand, it also combines the sense of hearing and sight which make motion pictures acceptable to people all over the world. Besides, motion pictures reflects the human civilization and affects it at the same time. For these reasons, motion pictures are the greatest scientific invention.
